Social Justice & Equity Imperatives | 16th Annual Leadership Workshop | American Kinesiology Association

The 16th Annual Leadership Workshop will bring together leaders, administrators, and faculty committed to advancing kinesiology as a unified discipline. It provides unique opportunities to learn, network, and share ideas with other administrators. The workshop helps attendees increase their knowledge to better lead kinesiology programs. We will again feature two pre-workshop sessions covering topics for undergraduate and graduate programs. The theme for 2023 is Social Justice & Equity -Building an equity-minded community is key for transformational change.

Leadership Workshop Presented by Dr. Akilah Carter-Francique

Fostering Belonging Beyond the Classroom

The purpose of this talk is to identify how fostering belonging in institutions of higher education can aid in the development and positive well-being of college students of color beyond the classroom. Since 2020, and through the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, greater emphasis has been placed upon anti-Black racism and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in a range of institutions, organizations, associations, and industries in the USA and abroad. The global nature of these efforts resulted in numerous campaigns, trainings, and personnel changes. That said, how are we preparing our students broadly, and students of color specifically, to work in these global spaces? What are the AKA as well as Kinesiology faculty, staff, and programs of study doing to support their educational and career preparation?
